Maura drives to work in 40 minutes.
She takes the same route to return home.
If her average speed on the trip home is half as fast as her average speed on the trip to work,
how much time does she spend driving on the round trip?
  • (A) 1 hour
  • (B) 1 hour, 15 minutes
  • (C) 1 hour, 20 minutes
  • (D) 1 hour, 40 minutes
  • (E) 2 hours

GMAT Problems Answers

Well to solve this firstly we should calculate her average speed while she was going to work.
Which comes out to be 45 miles per hour.
Now if her average speed while going home is half as fast as while coming to work was, the answer would be 22.5 miles per hour.
So the average speed for the total journey would be the average for these two values.
As the distance was same for both the journeys we can simply do 45 + 22.5 / 2 = 33.75 mph.

so it takes 80 mins return trip.
so 80+40 = 120 mins = 2 hours.

If x, y, and z are positive integers such that 0 < x < y < 2 and x is even,
y is odd, and z is prime, which of the following is a possible value of x + y + z?

ALGEBRA SOLUTION

If x, y, and z are positive integers such that x is a factor of y, and if x, y, and z are positive integers such that the value of the odd integer z.
The factors of 57 are 1, 3, 19 and 57 (which are all odd numbers).
Since X and Y are PRIMES - and Fact 1 tells us that the sum of those numbers must be an ODD - there must be one EVEN and one ODD number.
This means that X MUST be 2 and Y MUST be an odd prime.
Since Z is an ODD number, then X (which is EVEN) will NEVER be a factor of Z.
Thus, the answer to the question is ALWAYS NO.
Fact 1 is SUFFICIENT.
2) Z is a factor of 57.
Since x + y is even, (x + y)2 must also be even.
Since (x + y)2 + x + z is odd, then either x or z is odd, but not both.
C is the correct answer.

She takes the same route to return home.

If her average speed on the trip home is half as fast as her average speed on the trip to work,
what is her average speed, in miles per hour, for the entire round trip?

From the given inequality x < y < z, it is clear that the positive integers x, y, and z are different and are in increasing order of size.
Assume x > 1.
Then y > 2 and z > 3.
Adding the inequalities yields x + y.

Since x and y are positive integers and both are prime, x+y cannot be 1, 3
because if its 1 or 3, one of x or y has to be 0
There are only one case when x+y is EVEN and (x+y)+x+z is ODD,
That is case 7, where x=1, y=1 and z=2.
So x is odd, y is odd, and z is even.
The only one of the choices that must be true is A.

SOLVING GMAT maths data sufficiency

If x, y, and z are positive integers such that x is less than that.
As X has to be a PRIME NUMBER, we can assume it to be 2. So X can be 2 and Y can be 17 and thus statement 1 if true, proves that X is not the factor of Z.
Now Statement 2 in itself is not sufficient as it tells us about the math tutor online
